Match Play Leaderboard

With the President's Cup tournament quickly approaching, the recently redesigned USA TODAY Sports Data pages needed a solution for match play tournament scoring leaderboards. Match play events have a different structure and scorecard than regular PGA tournaments, and the existing leaderboards needed to be adapted to display this unique layout.

Unlike a regular stroke play tournament, match play events such as the Ryder Cup and President's Cup consists of two teams of golfers, who play in a series of events in singles and doubles. The actual score is secondary to winning the hole. Once a team builds an insurmountable lead, that round is won and the team receives a point. Match play rounds can also result in a tie in which both teams receive half a point. The challenge was to display this unusual scoring methodology while showing who won each round with just a quick scan of the scorecard. The scorecards for both singles and doubles events can be expanded for a detailed view of hole-by-hole scores, while the top bar shows the overall score and each team's progress toward winning the tournament.
